Rock climber Royal Robbins to speak at Gallo Center June 24

MODESTO - The Gallo Center for the Arts Hometown Heroes series continues on Friday, June 24 at 8:00 p.m. with a special interview with Royal Robbins, a pioneer of rock climbing whose competitive spirit helped change the sport forever. 2011 marks the 50-year anniversary of the first climbing of Half Dome in Yosemite National Park, accomplished by Royal and his teammates.

Tickets range from $12 to $50. The $50 ticket includes a pre-show reception with Royal, his wife Liz Robbins, and fellow climbing legend Tom Frost.

MedicAlert to offer sports IDs, 1-year memberships to Amgen athletes

MODESTO - MedicAlert Foundation will offer free sports IDs and first-year memberships to athletes participating in Stage of the Amgen Tour on Tuesday, May 17.

MedicAlert seeks to provide its health services to Amgen Tour athletes so that in the event of an emergency, the athletes' identification and critical health information (including allergies, medications and dosages, medical conditions, physician information and emergency room contacts) is made available to appropriate medical personnel.

Athletes may choose from a variety of MedicAlert sports band products and will receive one year of of membership benefits which include:

- Live 24/7 emergency response services
- Live 24/7 family/caregiver notification services

- Emergency Medical Information Record (EMIR) creation and storage
- Monthly email newsletter featuring health and wellness topics

Archery course for kids starts May 21

Archery course for kids starts May 21

MODESTO - The City of Modesto and the Yahi Bowmen are offering an archery course for participants 8 years old and up on May 21. The class will be held at the Archery Range at the Modesto Reservoir, 18143 Reservoir Road, from 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. The fee for the class is $30.

Class will begin with instruction followed by hands-on archery activities. The day ends with a barbecue lunch. Participants will receive a certificate of completion, club pin and workbook.

Register by May 12, in-person at the Parks, Recreation and Neighborhoods Department office, 1010 Tenth Street, Suite 4400, or online at www.modestogov.com/econnect. Bring signed waiver forms on the day of the event. If registering online, forms will be mailed to you.

John Muir elementary students to receive bike helmets in honor of Amgen

MODESTO - On Friday, May 6 at 2 p.m., more than 400 bicycle helmets and education curriculum booklets will be given to students at John Muir Elementary School (1215 Lucern Avenue) during a school assembly for the 2011 Amgen Tour of California Stage 3 Finish in Modesto.

City of Modesto Parks, Recreation and Neighborhoods Department staff will talk to students about the 2011 Amgen Tour of California (Modesto will host the Stage 3 Finish on Tuesday, May 17), the sport of cycling, helmet safety and healthy living.

The helmets were sponsored by Rabobank and the Stanislaus Bicycle Club sponsored the Education Curriculum Booklets.
