University of the Pacific program will help meet nationwide demand for data scientists

University of the Pacific this fall will begin showing working professionals not only how to crunch data, but how to use the information to help their organizations prosper.

Pacific’s School of Engineering and Computer Science is offering a new master of science degree in analytics, a high-paying field facing an acute shortage of professionals. The program will be based at the university’s new, state-of-the-art campus in San Francisco.

With courses such as Data Engineering, Machine Learning and Data Visualization, the program will combine rigorous academic training in analytics along with the practical experience of working on real-world case studies of issues facing industries today.

Modesto Pastor to Serve as Guest Chaplain in U.S. House of Representatives

With the sponsorship of U.S. Representative Jeff Denham (R-Turlock), Pastor Glen Berteau of The House Modesto will serve tomorrow as the guest chaplain in the United States House of Representatives. Pastor Berteau will offer the opening prayer of the legislative session on Tuesday, September 9, 2014 at 12 p.m. ET.

“Pastor Berteau has been a great leader in our community,” said Rep. Denham. “I’m honored to share the floor of the House with him and to bring his talents as a speaker and evangelist to my colleagues.”

San Joaquin Delta College Trustee Janet Rivera joined Latino public officials from across the nation at the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO) National Taskforce on Education in Washington D.C. (May 21-22). Over 13.6 million Latino students (ages 5-21) are currently enrolled in American schools. The NALEO Taskforce representatives will discuss the impact of sequestration and strategies for improving Latino student success with members of Congress and the Obama Administration.

Modesto City Manager Greg Nyhoff is pleased to announce the appointment of Galen Carroll to the position of Chief of Police.  Carroll possesses more than 18 years of experience in law enforcement with the City of Long Beach where he most recently served as Police Commander of the North Patrol Division.  Carroll began his career as a Police Officer, advanced to Sergeant then Lieutenant and is currently a Commander.  Carroll’s wide variety of experience includes Field Training, Internal Affairs, Port Security, Administration, Field Support and Investigations.
