Stanislaus County Teachers of the Year announced

MODESTO - The Modesto Rotary and the Stanislaus County Office of Education (SCOE) announced the selection of four local educators as 2011 Teachers of the Year and eight finalists at a Modesto Rotary luncheon on May 3. Each Teacher of the Year will receive a $1,000 cash award.

Teachers were nominated by their principals and finalists were selected from a record 85 nominees representing 19 school districts in Stanislaus County.

2011 Poets' Corner Contest winners announced

MODESTO - Winners have been announced for the 30th annual Poets' Corner Contest sponsored by the City of Modesto Parks, Recreation and Neighborhoods Department and the Modesto's Poets' Corner Committee, a sub-committee of the Culture Commission.

Judges selected 40 winning poems and 10 Honorable Mentions from over 150 entries.  Winners ranged in age from a third-grader to senior citizens.

The winning poems will be read at 1:30 p.m., Sunday, May 15 at the McHenry Museum, 14th and I Streets, with a reception to follow.  Each winner will receive a copy of the Modesto Poets' Corner Celebration Program of Contest Winning Poems.

LOS ANGELES, CA - Modesto born Jeremy Renner's schedule just keeps getting busier and busier.

Renner just wrapped up Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol, and he's currently in Berlin shooting Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters. After that he will head to New Mexico to begin shooting the Marvel comic book turned film The Avengers. Now the Hollywood Reporter claims Renner has formed his own production company and is aiming to bring acting legend Steve McQueen's life to the big screen.

MODESTO - The Modesto Rotary and the Stanislaus County Office of Education (SCOE) will honor the 2011 Stanislaus County Teachers of the Year Finalists and announce the selection of four 2011 Stanislaus County Teachers of the Year at a Rotary luncheon on May 3 at the DoubleTree Hotel, 1150 Ninth Street, at 12 p.m.

The four selected as Teachers of the Year will each receive a $1,000 cash award. Teachers were nominated by their principals and finalists were selected from a record 85 nominees representing 19 school districts in Stanislaus County.

Modesto mayor seeks to recognize extraordinary teens

MODESTO - Modesto Mayor Jim Ridenour is searching for 50 teens in Modesto who demonstrate a strong commitment to serving others, have overcome adversity or unique obstacles in life, achieved a significant accomplishment, or serve as positive role models for their peers.

These teens will be named to the inaugural Mayor’s Top 50 Teens program which aims to boost confidence, provide additional opportunities to get involved in the Modesto community, develop leaders, and meet other successful teens in Modesto.  The Mayor’s Top 50 Teens seeks to acknowledge those who do not routinely receive recognition for the remarkable things they do.

“In our new Strategic Plan, we as a council have committed to championing education partnerships,” said Ridenour. “And I am kicking off this initiative in support of that commitment.

Modesto police arrest one of their own

MODESTO - A Modesto police officer was arrested late last night on several felony charges as a result of an initial internal administrative investigation.

Anthony Trock, a 4-year veteran with the Modesto Police Department was arrested by Modesto police detectives after the department’s Internal Affairs Unit received a citizen complaint alleging misconduct against the officer. The Internal Affairs investigation quickly revealed possible criminal violations, which led to a criminal investigation by Modesto Police criminal investigators.

Through the criminal investigation, detectives discovered on several occasions Trock seized illegal drugs from individuals he contacted while in the performance of his law enforcement duties and failed to book the evidence. On at least one occasion he furnished the seized drugs, that being marijuana, to an adult individual.

Local middle school student wins wrestling state championship

MODESTO - Dan Savage Middle School 7th grader student Sariyah Jones, 12, won the Kids Folkstyle California State Championship in the 85-pound weight class in wrestling. The event was held at the Selland Arena in Fresno March 18-20.

Jones has been wrestling since she was four years old when girls in her age group weren't wrestling at all. She quickly became well known in the Modesto area as the "little girl wearing a candy cane singlet making all the boys cry."

She is a three time All American, four time state champion and last year, won second place in the middle school girls state championship. Her record for this season is 19 wins, six losses and 11 pins. She wrestles boys and girls in the 85-pound weight class.
