One dead in Modesto hotel fire


One person died in a hotel that caught fire early Saturday morning in Modesto.

Firefighters said a call came in at 5:30 a.m. that a hotel had caught fire on south 9th Street. One unit was completely damaged. Firefighters discovered a body in that unit.

No other information has been released at this time.

Modesto police search for 3 robbery suspects

Modesto police need help identifying three suspects who robbed a store Tuesday night.

According to the department's spokesperson Heather Graves, the robbery happened at Sam's Corner Market on Lucern Avenue.

No description of the suspects were provided by police, but the Modesto Police Department did tweet out surveillance video of the robbery in hopes that the suspects might be recognized.

Two people shot in Modesto, one transported to hospital


Two people were shot in Modesto Tuesday night. One victim was transported to the hospital with injuries believed to be critical, another person was treated with non life-threatening wounds, according to Modesto police.

Modesto police spokesperson Ivan Valencia said the shooting happened before 9 p.m. in the 300 block of Rachelle Circle. Valencia said that several people had congregated in front of a home before two shots rang out.

Two were were hit and two to three people were seen leaving the area on foot. There were no description of the suspects, according to Valencia.

Is Proposition 47 to blame for Modesto's high murder rate?

An unfortunate record has been set in Modesto, after another violent weekend. The city has experienced 26 homicides, that's two more than the previous high in 2012 and the year isn't over.

Law enforcement isn't just dealing with a high number of killings, law enforcement predicted something like this would happen.

About half of Modesto's killings are linked to gangs and drugs, a large number are linked to domestic problems.

A few are being linked, by police chief Galen Carroll, to Proposition 47.

"Just a quick look...three of our homicides...the suspect and victim were early releases from prison," said Carroll.

Man in critical condition after Modesto hit-and-run


A man is in critical condition after a hit-and-run in Modesto on Tuesday.

Police said the accident happened around 3:30 a.m. near Paradise Road.

The suspects car is described as a white utility vehicle.
