McGeorge welcomes new dean – Michael Hunter Schwartz

University of the Pacific’s McGeorge School of Law welcomed Michael Hunter Schwartz, a national leader in legal education reform, as its new dean. He started on July 1, 2017.

Schwartz previously served as the dean of the William H. Bowen School of Law at University of Arkansas at Little Rock. During his tenure there, the law school overhauled its curriculum, greatly expanded its support for student success and bar pass, and created a cutting-edge student mentoring program that received the American Bar Association's prestigious Gambrell Professsionalism Award. Schwartz has climbed the National Jurist's list of the 25 Most Influential People in Legal Education for the past three years, this year being ranked ninth. He has written extensively on teaching law, including What the Best Law Teachers Do, published by Harvard University Press. Schwartz is the 10th dean of McGeorge School of Law.

"Coming to McGeorge is like coming home for me," said Schwartz, a Southern California native who attended UC Berkeley and Hastings College of the Law in San Francisco. "I am excited that I will be working with the McGeorge faculty and staff and with everyone across Pacific to make McGeorge the law school everyone looks to for the brightest legal minds in the country."

Schwartz spent his first week as dean in Salzburg, Austria, joining the McGeorge Summer Program on International Legal Studies from July 4 through July 12. U.S. Supreme Court Associate Justice Anthony M. Kennedy taught for his 27th year in the program. Students had the opportunity to take Freedom of Expression in Europe and the United States co-taught by Justice Kennedy and Sionaidh Douglas-Scott, professor of European and Human Rights Law at Oxford University School of Law. The Salzburg Summer program runs through July 21.
