Sheriff: Deputy shot at during Modesto-Ceres pursuit

MODESTO, Calif. - A deputy was shot at several times during a Sunday evening pursuit of two individuals driving a vehicle used in at least one robbery in Modesto.

According to Sgt. Anthony Bejaran of the Stanislaus County Sheriff's Dept., a deputy responded to a Modesto Police broadcast at 11:20 p.m. of a vehicle suspected of being used in one or more robberies.

The deputy spotted the vehicle near the intersection of Yosemite and D St. in Modesto and the driver fled south into Ceres.  During the pursuit, one or more people in the fleeing car shot at the deputy several times, said Bejaran.

The pursuit ended when the fleeing driver crashed under the southbound Highway 99 exit at Whitmore Ave. The occupants of the vehicle then exited and engaged in a gunfight with the deputy as they fled on foot, Bejaran said.

Ceres Police, Modesto Police and California Highway Patrol officers responded to assist in the search for the two people.

One of the individuals was found hiding on the west side of the freeway, not far from where the vehicle crashed, said Bejaran.

The second person was found by Ceres Police Dept. SWAT members.

Neither the deputy, nor the apprehended individuals were injured in the pursuit or gun battle.
