Event about making lemons into lemonade

Event about making lemons into lemonade

In a challenging economy, it might be tempting to believe that entrepreneurial opportunities have gone sour.

But many local business owners are getting together to give Modesto children a first, sweet taste of success by being part of nationwide Lemonade Day.

The effort is spearheaded by local event planner Tammie Webb, and the goal is to have kids pre-kindergarten through high school own and operate 1,500 lemonade stands throughout the Modesto area on May 19.

Christmas tree recycling tips

SACRAMENTO --  Tuesday, on News10 Good Morning, we spent the morning at the Sacramento Recycling and Transfer station at 8491 Fruitridge Road.  It's just one of the many places you can take your Christmas tree to be recycled this year.

If you are planning on recycling your tree, here are a few tips from the City of Sacramento website.

-- If your tree is 6 feet or longer, make sure you cut it into sections of 3 feet or less.

-- Remove trees from stands or plastic bags.

-- Take off any ornaments, lights, nails, tinsel, and metal rods supporting the trees.

And remember that artificial trees will not be accepted.

The whole idea of recycling your tree is to do good for the environment, but also, keeping it out of a landfill.

Hand transplant recipient still gaining mobility

California's first hand transplant recipient, Emily Fennell, did something she hasn't done in five years. She wrapped Christmas presents.

Emily is the first person on the West Coast to get a hand transplant and the thirteenth in the United States.

Emily, now 26, lost her right hand after it was crushed in a car crash in June 2006.

In March, she underwent groundbreaking transplant surgery at UCLA Medical Centers. Doctors called her 14-hour surgery a success.

When she woke up, she could wiggle her fingers and make a fist.

Emily's hand continues to gain mobility each day, but it's not quite perfect yet.

"It's still a work in progress. I can't move the fingers individually yet, but I can tie my shoes a little bit easier. I can hold a hair dryer with my hand and brush my hair at the same time," said Fennell. "In hand therapy, I'm able to make some Christmas ornaments. I can do little things now."
