Detectives look for person of interest in Modesto fatal shooting

MODESTO, CA - Stanislaus County sheriff's investigators are looking for a person of interest in the death of a man found shot in the front yard of a home Thursday night.

The victim had not been identified as of Friday morning. He was discovered in the yard in the area of Mono Drive and Mono Park at 9:35 p.m., according to a sheriff's news release.

After talking to witnesses and investigating, detectives want to speak to 20-year-old Kraig Palacio in connection with the shooting. Palacio was described as 5 feet 5 inches tall and weighing 190 pounds. He has brown hair and blue eyes.

Modesto police arrest 'Super hero bandit' suspect

MODESTO, CA - Police arrested a man they said wore a "Captain America" mask while robbing two Modesto businesses earlier this week.

Aaron Gonzalez, 22, was arrested after what Modesto police Lt. Rick Armendariz said was a failed attempt to rob the Rogers Jewelers in northwest Modesto on Wednesday.  

3 arrested for baby funeral scam in Modesto

MODESTO, Calif. - Modesto police said they arrested three suspects for allegedly scamming people into giving them money for the death of an infant.

Police said Mark Barajas, 35, Janie Barajas, 26, and Lisa Barajas, 37, were standing on the side of the road near the intersection of Sisk Road and Briggsmore Avenue holding a poster size sign, which depicted a picture of an infant and a caption that read "Funeral donations for Baby Daniel Lopez."

The three suspects were soliciting drivers to raise money for the baby's funeral costs and ended up raising $400; however, after police talked to the three suspects, they discovered the fundraiser was a scam.

Police said their investigation revealed the three printed pictures of an infant they found online. Additional posters, depicting a picture of a toddler, were also located in the truck of the suspect's vehicle.

Man wounded after fight in Modesto market leads to shooting

MODESTO, Calif. - A man was wounded after an argument escalated into a shooting Saturday night.

The shooting happened around 8 p.m. at the Alex and Sons Market on the 500 block of Martin Luther King Drive, Modesto police Lt. Craig Gundlach said.

One person fired shots at the other when the fight between at least two people escalated.

Gundlach said the victim was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Police at the scene continue to gather evidence and witness statements.
