Faith leaders to unite for statewide prayer service Tuesday

Faith leaders to unite for statewide prayer service Tuesday

MODESTO - The evening before the California legislature’s constitutional deadline to pass a balanced budget, leaders of all faiths will gather in cities across California to pray that legislators have the strength and vision to "Stand up for California" and our seniors, children and struggling communities.

A press release Tuesday announced prayer vigils will be held simultaneously in five California cities, in which interfaith leaders will remember the children, families, seniors, people with disabilities and other Californians who have suffered harm because of budget cuts already made. To avoid another $9.6 billion in devastating cuts to families, the clergymen and women will pray that legislators have the strength to maintain existing revenues.

Modesto's gathering will take place at Tuesday, June 14 at 5 p.m. in front of Senator Anthony Cannella's office located at 918 15th Street.

Fire damages home, displaces Modesto family

MODESTO, CA - A Modesto family was displaced after a fire Saturday around 3:30 a.m. significantly damaged their home.

When Stanislaus County fire crews arrived on Conejo Avenue, the home was engulfed in pretty heavy fire, said fire engineer Mike Avila.

It took crews 10 minutes to knock down the fire, but remained on scene until 8 a.m.

A fire captain was burned while fighting the fire, said Avila. He was taken to the hospital, and released Saturday morning. Avila said the captain is doing okay.

The three adults living in the home are being assisted by the American Red Cross. The family lost all their possessions in the fire, said Red Cross officials.

Avila said the fire appears to have started in the back of the home.
