Our forefathers may have made hay while the sun shined, but today Central Valley residents are making electricity.

Reduced system costs, continued economic incentives and more efficient technology have combined to make this a great time for homeowners to invest in residential solar energy.

Modesto startup unveils FlexScore to make money management fun

MODESTO – For a lot of people taking stock of their financial life can be daunting and scary. Kind of like getting a report card in school.

But what if it were more like a game?

Central Valley Job Fair

On Wednesday, September 25, 2013, U.S. Representative Jeff Denham (R-Turlock) will hold a Central Valley Job Fair in conjunction with the Stanislaus Economic Development and Workforce Alliance. The job fair will take place from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. at Modesto Centre Plaza.

“The Central Valley’s unemployment rate decreased in August, which is great news,” said Rep. Denham. “However, there are still too many without a job who want to work. Assisting individuals in finding work is a primary goal of mine. That includes passing job creating legislation and holding events such as this fair to connect job seekers with employers who currently have available positions.”

The event will feature over 40 Central Valley employers seeking new hires in a wide range of fields.

Employers attending include Walmart, Lowe’s, Blue Diamond, Dole, Target, City of Modesto, G3 Enterprises, Duarte Nursery, California Natural Products, G3 and more.

What you need to know before you sign up for health insurance

If you are changing your insurance plan this year because of changes from the Affordable Care Act, there are two dates you should have circled on your calendar. One is Oct. 1, which is the day enrollment begins. The other is Dec. 15, which is when paperwork is due.

Health care reform has created a lot of confusion and even misunderstanding for businesses and individual consumers. As I write this, insurance agents are still receiving updates, almost daily, as to how the new plans will be administered.

Despite the odds, restaurants remain among some of the most popular businesses to open in the Central Valley. Market Tavern at Lincoln Center in Stockton and Mike’s Grillhouse in Modesto plan openings in the next several months. They will join the Texas Roadhouse and In N Out in Modesto and French 25 and The Habit in Stockton as eateries to open this year.

Residential construction is beginning to show signs of life after collapsing during the recession.

Area Fresh & Easy stores that opened last year are scheduled to close in the next few weeks, including five stores that opened in the Sacramento area and one in Modesto.

British food giant Tesco PLC, who owns Fresh & Easy supermarkets, has sold a number of its stores to Yucaipa Companies LLC. The stores not sold will be closed. The sale to Yucaipa is expected to be completed within three months.

Most products in the closing stores will be reduced by 25 percent starting Wednesday, Sept. 11.
