Tony Melendez to perform in Modesto

MODESTO - Guitarist Tony Melendez and the group Kerigma will perform at the Modesto Centre Plaza, 1000 L Street, on Saturday, Feb. 19 from 7 p.m. - 9:30 p.m.

The concert is open to the public and a $10 donation will be accepted per person. Tickets may be purchased by calling the Office of Hispanic Youth and Young Adults Ministry at the Diocese of Stockton at (209) 466-0636 ext. 632 or 627.

Born with no arms, Meléndez began playing guitar with his feet and singing in the Los Angeles area in 1985. On September 15, 1987 Meléndez sang "Never Be the Same" while playing the guitar with his feet in a special performance for Pope John Paul II. Visibly moved, the Pope descended from his chair and embraced Meléndez. As of 2005, his band, Tony Meléndez and the Toe Jam Band, have a busy concert schedule. Meléndez gives motivational talks and has written a book. He campaigns actively for the pro-life cause.

Catholic Youth & Young Adult Congress to be held Feb. 19

MODESTO - More than 1,000 young Latino Catholics will gather at Modesto Centre Plaza for the 2011 Catholic Hispanic Youth and Young Adults Congress on Feb. 19 and 20 from 8:30 a.m. - 4p.m.

Both days will feature conferences, dramas, great music and testimonies by Tony and Joe Melendez. Two tracks of conferences will be held: one for teenagers (bilingual) and one for young adults (in Spanish). Rev. Stephen Blaire, bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Stockton, will preside at the Eucharistic Celebration Sunday, along with other local speakers.

Donation is $5 per day and participants can register at the door. The Modesto Centre Plaza is located at 1000 L Street.

2011 Annual Poets' Corner contest

MODESTO - The Parks, Recreation and Neighborhoods Department and the City of Modesto’s Poets' Corner Committee announces the 30th Annual Poets' Corner Contest. The contest is open to all Stanislaus County residents and offers two categories for poetry entries. The submission period for this contest begins Tuesday, February 1, 2011.

This year's Special Theme category is poetry as a tribute to Water, in recognition of this precious liquid necessary for life in the form of our local rivers, streams, lakes, creeks, irrigation canals and how we use water in agriculture or for recreation, business and our households.

Stanislaus County Fair recognized by fair industry

TURLOCK - The Stanislaus County Fair has been awarded a blue ribbon for being innovative and authentic. The fair was recognized for a total of eight awards at the Western Fairs Association (WFA) convention in January. The local fair won first place awards for "Our Best New Idea This Year, Marketing," "Social Media Campaign," "Community Outreach Program," and "Printed Competitive Exhibit Handbook."

"Our success is a result of the Stanislaus County Fair's dedicated team of board members, sponsors, staff and volunteers," said Adrenna Alkjas, spokeswoman for the fair. "Our team is committed to excellence and that is what makes the fair a stand out among fairs in the Western United States and Canada."

The WFA is a professional non-profit trade association serving the fair industry throughout 14 states in Canada.

Couples invited to Valentine's Day dance at Maddux Youth Center

MODESTO - Maddux Youth Center will present "In the Mix at 615 Valentine Dance" on Friday, Feb. 11 from 6 - 9 p.m. at the facility located at 615 Sierra Drive. Admission is $5.

The event, sponsored by the City of Modesto Parks, Recreation and Neighborhoods Department, will include high energy music, fun activities for couples and refreshments. A variety of dance contests, for ages 12-15 years of age, will also take place such as "Dougie Contest" at 7 p.m., a "Break Dance Contest" at 7:30 p.m. and a "Jerkin Contest" at 8 p.m. Prizes will be presented to the winners of each contest.

YES KIDETTES to present 'A Year with Frog and Toad Kids'

STANISLAUS COUNTY - YES (Youth Entertainment Stage) KIDETTES will present "A Year with Frog and Toad Kids" musical at 7 p.m. on Jan. 28 at Johansen High School's Eleanor McKnight-Haines Theatre located at 641 Norseman Drive in Modesto. Two matinee performances are scheduled for Jan. 29 and 30 at 3 p.m.

Tickets are $8 for children 2-12 year old and $12 for teens and adults. Infants under 2 years old will not be admitted. Tickets are available online and at the box office an hour and a half prior to each performance.
